Nobel Heart
Nobel laureate Sir Richard J. Roberts
On 24th August, 2017, Nobel laureate Sir Richard J. Roberts gave a Nobel Laureate Lecture entitled A Crime Against Humanity. The event hosted by the Faculty of Science, and supported by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Office, was held at the High Impact Research (HIR) Building, University of Malaya. Sir Richard J. Roberts was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993 with Professor Phillip A. Sharp from MIT “for their discoveries of split genes”.

In his lecture, Sir Roberts talked about the smear campaigns by the green parties on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). These movements create a setback to the solution to the world’s food shortage and malnutrition among children, disenfranchising especially the people in the developing countries. He urged that this unsubstantiated fearmongering must be stopped, asking, “how many kids have to die before we consider this a crime against humanity?”

The Faculty of Science always opens her door to receive visitors from various institutions around the world to forge collaboration in research and education, and share on institutional management practices. In separate events in August 2017, we received visitors from the KPR Institute of Engineering & Technology, Coimbatore, India, Fakultas Teknik dan Sains Universiti Nasional, Indonesia(UNAS), and Professor Wang Yifang, the Director of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.

60th Merdeka Celebration and Hari Malaysia

In conjunction with Malaysia’s 60th Merdeka celebration, the Faculty of Science gathered members of the Faculty for a people-forming-60 video clip. The shooting was timely if not perfect, as it was shot just days before 31st August, 2017, hence we were greeted by the fly-past of the Royal Armed helicopters which were doing their rehearsal acts for the Merdeka. Everyone was overjoyed!

In the spirit of Hari Kemerdekaan and Hari Malaysia, the Faculty of Science hopes that together, we continue to work in harmony in this multicultural environment and work towards the greater success of the Faculty, the University of Malaya, and our beloved country, Malaysia.
