New Vice-Chancellor and Thank You Note

The Faculty of Science would like to congratulate and extend a warm welcome to Y.Bhg. Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Abdul Rahim Hashim, who has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya, effective from November 1, 2017. We look forward to working together with our new VC and continue soaring upwards to make great things happen for the University of Malaya.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Y.Bhg. Professor Dato’ Dr. Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) for his commitment and excellent leadership as the Acting Vice-Chancellor from May to October 2017.
Honorary Doctorate: Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng
Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng, the Executive Chairman of IOI Corporation Berhad, was conferred the Honorary Doctorate by the University of Malaya in the recent University of Malaya’s Convocation. IOI is a plantation company which started in 1982, and within 30 years, it has grown rapidly to become one of the largest oil palm plantations in the world, operating in seven countries. IOI Group is also the leader in real estate development in Malaysia, and among its projects include port cities, shopping malls, condominiums, office towers and resorts.

In recognition of Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng's contribution to the property and palm oil industries in Malaysia, he was awarded the Doctor of Science by the University of Malaya.

Convocation: Graduates’ Time of Their Life

The University of Malaya’s Convocation took place from October 21 – 24, 2017, at the famed Dewan Tunku Canselor. This year, the number of graduates from the Faculty of Science is 121 for Ph.D., including one Aegrotat Award, 209 for M.Sc., and 394 for B.Sc.

Prior to the Convocation Day, the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Science held a Graduation Appreciation Ceremony on October 15, 2017, to celebrate the success of our graduates. The event was packed with great catch-ups and of course, yummy food, all prepared by the dedicated staffs of the Dean’s Office.

The journey to earning a degree varies for each individual, hence the Faculty of Science would like to congratulate all graduates for successfully braving and completing this journey. We hope they have had the time of their life ( video clip - Click Here).
Code of Conduct and Discipline
Excellence must be intertwined with great character. On October 27, 2017, the Integrity Unit of the University of Malaya held a briefing on the Code of Conduct and Discipline at the Faculty of Science. Mdm. Nor Aisyah Samah from the Integrity Unit, reminded all staffs to enculturate and enhance integrity in our daily work, display admirable discipline, and comply to the University’s rules and regulation.
Research Grant Clinic of Faculty of Science 1/2017
On October 25, 2017, a Research Grant Clinic was held at the Faculty of Science and conducted by Associate Professor Dr. Saiful Anuar Karsani, the acting Dean of the Frontier Science Research Cluster, and Dr. Noor Hasnah Moin, the Director of Center of Research Grant Management, University of Malaya. The objective of the clinic was to guide lecturers to write successful grant applications.

Forum: Multidisciplinary Fundamental Research in UM

On October 30, 2017, a forum was held at the Faculty of Science to resolve some confusion and misconception on fundamental research. The forum was co-organized by the Frontier Science Research Cluster (FSRC) and Faculty of Science. The panelists were Professor Dr. Onn Haji Hashim, Professor Dr. Rauzah Hashim, Professor Dr. Sithi V. Muniandy and Professor Ir. Dr. Masjuki Haji Hassan. The moderator for the forum was Associate Professor Dr. Saiful Anuar Karsani, the acting Dean of FRSC.
Collaboration with Osaka University and Nagoya University
A delegation from the Department of Physics visited Osaka University and Nagoya University to discuss on possible research collaborations, staffs/students exchange, and initial discussion on memorandum of understanding (MoU) and memorandum of agreement (MoA). Nagoya University has been responsible for operating the NANTEN-2 4m telescope in Chile and offered to help with the calibration and pointing efficiency study of the UPSI-UM radio telescope.

The delegation was led by Professor Dr. Hasan Abu Kassim, the head of Department of Physics, with Associate Professor Dr. Zamri Zainal Abidin, Dr. Norhasliza Yusof, and Dr. Zarina Aspanut.

At Osaka University
MoU with Newcastle University, United Kingdom
On November 6, 2017, the University of Malaya signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Newcastle University, United Kingdom, to strengthen the ties between the two institutions via students/staffs exchange, joint research activities, and joint teaching development. It was signed by our Associate Vice-Chancellor (International), Professor Dr. Kamila Ghazali and the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University, Professor Richard Davies. Also in attendance were Provost and CEO of Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, Professor Roger Barton and the Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya, Professor Dr. Zanariah Abdullah who witnessed the signing of the MoU.
Architectonic of Kalam Science
A lecture series on the Architectonic of Kalam Science was first held on October 24, 2017, at the Faculty of Science. The talk was jointly organized by the Department of Science and Technology Studies and the Islamic & Strategic Studies Institute (ISSI). The next series of talk was held on November 7, 2017, and would continue on November 21, 2017.

University of Malaya-Academia Sinica (UM-AS) Research Symposium 2017

The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with Academia Sinica, Taiwan, recently organized the University of Malaya-Academia Sinica (UM-AS) Research Symposium 2017. The program which took place on October 31, 2017, included oral presentations by selected scientists from the two institutions. A special session with representatives of Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) was also held for the postgraduate students in UM to consider the prospect of advancing their studies in Academia Sinica.

In addition, a meeting was also held following the symposium to further discuss collaboration between UM and Academia Sinica on
undergraduate student mobility program, Masters/Doctorate scholarship under the sponsorship of the TIGP International Internship Program (IIP), UM staffs short-term visit program, and post-doctoral fellowship program.

National Postgraduate and Scholars' Conference on Science, Technology and Society (STS 2017)

The National Postgraduate and Scholars' Conference on Science, Technology and Society (STS 2017) was held on November 1 – 2, 2017, by the Department of Science and Technology Studies. The focus of the conference was on the contribution of STS studies in enabling global, national and local transitions towards sustainability, especially in support of the 2030 global and national agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference theme was Science, Technology for Sustainability.
Visit from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan
On November 7, 2017, Adjunct Associate Professor Chai Yaw Wang from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, visited the Faculty of Science to discuss on potential research collaboration and staffs/students exchange between the two institutions.

Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF)

Our third year Materials Science students from the Department of Physics, who were introduced on the concept of an OpenLab, were required to design a demonstration kit for the Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF 2017), held from November 3 – 5, 2017. The KLESF is a platform to promote interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among primary and secondary school students. With some financial support from the Institute of Physics Malaysia, topped with perseverance, collaboration and hard work, the students successfully developed five demonstration kits in which some of the assembled parts were from scrap and unwanted computer hardware. These kits were: Laser Engraver, Polarizing Microscope Using Smartphone, Magnetic Pendulum, Physics of Future City, and Plasma Ball. Visitors of KLESF 2017 were absolutely marveled by our students’ ingenious kits!
