Exam Fever

After 14 weeks of lectures and a week of revision, the final examination for Semester I for the 2017/2018 session was held from January 2 – 14, 2018.  The main locations for the examination are at the Examination Building, Dewan Tunku Canselor, and Auditorium Perdanasiswa Complex.

Prior to the finals, all departments & institutes organized a Solat Hajat program for their students.  Respective lecturers also shared their words of wisdom with the students in facing the exams.

As soon as the examination ended, the marking “spree” began for the lecturers!  Indeed, 2018 is going to be another eventful year from the very start!

MoU with National Taiwan University 

The Faculty of Science signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Taiwan University (NTU) on December 19, 2017.  NTU was led by Professor Dr. Liu Shiuh Tzung, the Dean of College of Science.  The MoU would strengthen the ties between the two institutions in research and teaching development.

International Malaysian - French Scientific Conference 2017 (IMFSC 2017)

On December 18 – 19, 2017, the International French - Malaysian Natural Products Laboratory (IFM-NatProLab) from the Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Malaysia, Institut de Chimie des Substances Naturelles (ICSN) and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), organized the International Malaysian – French Scientific Conference 2017 (IMFSC 2017).  The event was inspired by the fruitful scientific cooperation between University of Malaya and CNRS, a two-way cooperative scientific research in the field of natural products between Malaysia and France for more than two decades since 1980.

The conference’s theme was “inspired by nature, delivered through science for a better world”.

Keele University Collaboration

The Faculty of Science recently received a visit from Professor Jonathan Wastling, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Postgraduate Studies) and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Keele University, United Kingdom.  The Faculty of Natural Sciences at Keele offers courses in Life Sciences, Chemical and Physical Sciences, Geography, Geology and Environment, Computing and Mathematics and Psychology.

The purpose of the visit is to discuss the exchange opportunities for staff and undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Kansas State University Collaboration

On January 11, 2018, the Faculty of Science received a visit from Kansas State University to discuss new undergraduate programs proposal, i.e., B.Sc. in Feed Science and B.Sc. in Milling Science.  The programs will be conducted as either 3 u + 1 i (u = years in university and i = year in industry) or 2 u + 2 i study plans, with the Malayan Flour Mills Berhad (MFM) as our industrial partner.

Workshop for Young Lecturers

On January 12 – 13, 2018, the Faculty of Science organized a career enhancement workshop for the young lecturers at the Glami-Lemi Biotechnology Research Center, Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan.  These young lecturers were guided on research and teaching by invited speakers, including the Vice-Chancellor Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Abdul Rahim Hashim, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) Dato’ Professor Dr. Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) Professor Dr. Noorsaadah Abd. Rahman.

Taiwan Visit

2018 Bilateral Symposium on Cutting-Edge Chemistry

In order to facilitate academic exchange in various chemistry related fields between Malaysia and Taiwan, the 2018 Bilateral Symposium on Cutting-Edge Chemistry was held on January 15 – 16, 2018 at National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan.  The delegation from the University of Malaya was led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation), Professor Dr. Noorsaadah Abd. Rahman, joined by Dean Professor Dr. Zanariah Abdullah, Dr. Choo Yeun Mun (Director of Center for Research Services, Institute of Management and Research), and a few researchers from the Department of Chemistry, who shared their research achievements to their Taiwanese host.  Professor Dr. Noorsaadah, Professor Dr. Zanariah, and Dr. Choo also had the privilege to meet the senior vice-president of National Tsing Hua University, Professor Sinn-Wen Chen, to discuss on potential collaboration.

National Health Research Institutes

Capitalizing on their visit in Taiwan, Professor Dr. Noorsaadah, Professor Dr. Zanariah, and Dr. Choo visited the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) to discuss on potential collaboration.  NHRI plans to visit us tentatively, in March.

National Taiwan University

On January 18, 2018, the Faculty of Science team led by our Dean Professor Dr. Zanariah, together with the heads of Department of Chemistry, Department of Geology, and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, were invited to visit National Taiwan University (NTU), who signed an MoU with us in December, 2017.  The discussion focused on research collaboration, dual Ph.D. program and staff exchange.  Through the discussion, it was agreed that a bilaterial seminar will be organized in either July or August 2018 to share and match the researches at both institutions. 

 e-Learning Workshop

To ensure the smooth running of the e-Learning Week on April 2 – 7, 2018, for the Department of Science and Technology Studies, and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, in which all teaching and learning processes would be implemented online, the Faculty of Science organized an e-Learning Workshop on January 19, 2018.  With participation from other departments as well, the participants were exposed to various tools to enhance their lectures, such as videos, chats, and other applications.  The speaker was Dr. Zahiruddin Fitri Abu Hassan, the Head of the e-Learning Unit of the Academic Enhancement and Leadership Development Centre (ADeC).

SAINS e-Bulletin: 2nd Edition

The 2nd edition of the Faculty of Science’s e-Bulletin, SAINS, has recently been published.  Published biannually, SAINS compiles the activities and the achievements of the Faculty of Science.  In this issue, SAINS focuses on the Faculty of Science‘s Strategic Plan 2016 – 2020Associate Professor Dr. Yap Seong Ling from the Department of Physics, is the editor of SAINS.

World Universities Debating Championship, Mexico City

Associate Professor Dr Chandran Somasundram from the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS), as the Head Coach of the University of Malaya’s English Debating Team, shared another success by his team at the World Universities Debating Championship in Mexico City from December 27, 2017 – January 4, 2018.  After 9 preliminary rounds, UM finished on 19 points to break 19th in the Open category for the first time in our history. With this achievement, UM’s current world ranking is now at 19 as a team, and 13 as an institution, a tremendous improvement from 238 in 2015 and 122 in 2016.  Associate Professor Dr. Chandran was assisted by Dr. Zuliana Razali, also from IBS, to help prepare the debaters, Vinodhan Kuppusamy and Leroy Ting (both final-year Law students).

A big thank you to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni) Datuk Professor Dr. Rohana Yusof for her continuous support to the debating team.

The University of Malaya Excellence Award 2017

On December 20, 2017, the University of Malaya Excellence Award 2017 was held at the Dewan Tunku Canselor.  We would like to congratulate the following members of the Faculty of Science for their outstanding performance in 2017.
Water Cooler:  The Refreshing Return of Agro Bazaar
The Agro Bazaar organized by the Faculty of Science recently saw some refreshing returns.  The amount made from Agro Bazaar was used to install 2 units of water cooler dispensers.  One unit was kindly donated by Water Jaya Enterprise.  The water cooler locations are at Dataran Sains, Anjung iSAINS, and Santai Ilmu@Dataran Kimia.
