The Maldives National University Visit
On March 30, 2018, a delegation from the University of Malaya visited The Maldives National University to explore the possibility of students and staffs exchange, research collaboration, and to establish a memorandum of understanding (MoA) between the two institutions.  The Faculty of Science was represented by Professor Dr. Zanariah Abdullah, the Dean of Faculty of Science, Professor Dr. Ismail Yusoff, the Deputy Dean of Postgraduates, and Ms. Wang Sok Wai, the Assistant Registrar.  Professor Dr. Yatimah Alias, the director of the Center for Curriculum Development of the University of Malaya, was also present to witness the discussion


Yogyakarta State University

The Faculty of Science was honored to receive a delegation from Yogyakarta State University, Indonesia, on April 9, 2018.  The delegation was led by Dr. rer. nat. Senam, the Vice Rector for Cooperation and Development Affairs.  The purpose of the visit was to discuss on potential research collaboration, and exchange credit for undergraduate program.

Cardiff University

On April 13, 2018, the Faculty of Science was privileged to receive a delegation from Cardiff University, United Kingdom, led by Professor John L. Harwood from the School of Biosciences.  The purpose of the visit was to discuss on joint programs and potential students exchange.
UM Learning Improvement and Teaching Enhancement Research (UM-LiTeR) Award
The Academic Enhancement and Leadership Development Center (ADeC) of the University of Malaya recently organized a UM-LiTeR Conference to showcase research conducted to improve and enhance learning and teaching practices in the classrooms, courses, or programs.

Two researchers from the Faculty of Science won bronze medals for their respective research.  Dr. Azizah Mainal, from the Department of Chemistry, won for her work on The Application of Ta'lim, Tarbiyah and Ta'dib to Tackle Lackadaisicalness among Students, while Dr. Mohd Salim Mohamed, from the Department of Science and Technology Studies, won for his work on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in Ethics Course Delivery for Science Undergraduates: Students' Achievement and Attitudes.

Astronomy Talk

On April 10, 2018, the Radio Cosmology Research Laboratory at the Department of Physics organized a seminar on Quasi-Stellar Object (QSO).  The talk was given by Professor Dr. Hwang Chorng Yuan, our visiting professor from the National Central University of Taiwan.  Professor Hwang and his team invented a new method to identify a large sample of red QSOs. They investigated the properties of these red QSOs and studied the color and brightness variabilities for a sub-sample of selected red QSOs.

In conjunction with his visit, a discussion on dual Ph.D. program was held, which will follow with a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing in the near future.

Institute of Biological Sciences Outreach Activities

A group of twelve researchers from the Institute of Biological Sciences have reached out and shared their research outputs to the students of SMK Jenjarom, Banting, Selangor, in conjunction with their Science and Mathematics Week. The objective of the outreach was to attract school students in Science, especially in Biological Sciences, and to expose them to the latest studies conducted by UM researchers.  Leading the UM research delegation to the school was Dr. Rosazlin Abdullah.

Among the research materials exhibited included the demonstration of the use of special software used by Bioinformatics researchers, pineapple plants produced from tissue culture by Biotechnology researchers, replicas of mammals from the Ecology and Biodiversity field, and soil and biochar exhibition by researchers from Science and Environmental Management.

Science Appreciation Camp

A Science Appreciation Camp was conducted at Glami Lemi Biotechnology Research Center, Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan, on March 20 – March 21, 2018.

This program was one of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) activities that was signed between the Faculty of Science and Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gombak.  The program aimed to attract the students to love Science by exposing them to awesome hands-on experiments such as Chemical Garden, Separation Science, Poke the Balloon, Maths is Fun, Fatamorgana (Mirage), Bugs Hunting, Let’s Grow Mushrooms, and Biochar – Going Sustainable.  The students’ positive feedback on the program was a testimonial that the Camp was a success.

The University of Malaya 3-Minute Thesis (UM3MT) was organized at the Faculty level on March 26, 2018.  Originated in 2008 from the University of Queensland, Australia, this competition requires the contestants to summarize their theses in three minutes using layman’s terms, and in an engaging manner.  The winners from the Faculty of Science were Lee Pui Kee (1st place), Hanisah Ali (2nd place), and Sharmilla Ashokhan (3rd place).
UM Interzone Sports Carnival

In the recent UM Interzone Sports Carnival, our sportsmen and sportswomen from the Faculty of Science represented Zone 7, with their slogan Zon 7 Pantang Mengalah (Zone 7 Never Gives Up).  Winners were:  Gold – Football 9s, Petanque (Women), Badminton, Tenpin Bowling (Men); Silver – Tug of War; Bronze – Volleyball (Women), Hockey (Men), Netball, Carrom.
