A recent trend in the labor market, gig economy refers to a working environment in which temporary and flexible jobs are common, and companies are hiring freelancers instead of full-time employees.  Jumping on the bandwagon, the Ministry of Education Malaysia, the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC), and Startup Malaysia, recently organized a Gig Economy Hackathon to expose this trending entrepreneurship to the public university students in Malaysia.  15 UM students participated in the program, blending with students from other universities in a team of 8.  At the end of the program, all teams had to pitch their business plan.  UM students won in the categories Best Overall Solution and Best Marketplace.  UM winners are students from the Faculty of Engineering, with Koay Jing Wei, from the Faculty of Science, who won the second category.

Social Engagement

Social engagement in education is very important because it mobilizes knowledge between the university and community in order to address social issues.  It also promotes volunteerism, empathy, leadership quality, and sustainable development in students.  In UM, first year students would take this university course and plan their social activities with the community they have chosen.  They may even conduct a donation drive to raise fund for their social project.  At the end of the course, they would reflect on their involvement with the community and how it has given a positive impact in their lives.  Most impressively, these students would even continue volunteering at their chosen community even after the course has ended.  Featured here are our Bioinformatic students who did their activities at the Persatuan Rumah Kebajikan Perlindungan Teratak Nur Insan (NURI) under the supervision of Dr. Arpah Abu.
